Lesson Plan

Synopsis: Paying Your Employees for “Favours” In this scene, the Boss of the massage parlour was going to pay money to his female employee for a “favour”. The girl, however, doesn’t have much time and the boss doesn’t want to rush. So the deal is forfeited and ends by giving her some taxi money so that she can meet up with her friends. Let’s take a look!Dialogue:

1 (girl)老板，我洗好了
lǎobǎn ，wǒ xǐ hǎo le
Boss, I wash [finished action] [particle of completed action]
I have already taken a shower(Chinese not displaying?

2 (girl)你洗了吗？
Update: should be:你洗了吗？
nǐ xĭ le ma ？
You wash [particle of completed action, PCA] [question particle, QP]
What about you?

NOTE: 你洗好了吗and 你好了吗 would also makes sense here. But in the movie she did indeed say “你洗了吗？”(sometimes the character recognition software that rips these can be a bit off. Thanks for pointing this out MrDanielTynan).

3 (girl)对了，今天得快一点
duì le ，jīntiān dei3 kuài yīdiǎn
Oh yeah, today need quick more

4 (girl)我晚上约了小姐妹吃饭呢

boss, I also did not say that[”ya” expresses a complaining tone]

Particles/Grammer Explained:
好hǎo - can mean an action has been finished.
我洗好了wǒ xǐ hǎo le - I finished showering, I just showered, I just finished showering.
我修好了 wǒ xiū hǎo le - I fixed it, I finished fixing it, etc.

了 le - particle of completed action, PCA

吗 ma - question particle, QP, used at the end of a question (usually to indicate a “yes or no” question)

呢 ne - empatic final, EF.

啊a - exclamatory particle, EP. Usually used when being polite or when you’re excited about something.

的de - possessive adjectival suffix, PAS eg

我的名字是jack. 的 makes “I” changed to “my”. 里面的人 lǐmiàn de rén lit. means “inside’s people” or the people inside. 飞机里面的人 fēijī lǐmiàn de rén mean “airplane inside’s people” or the people inside the airplane.

呀ya - usually conveys a complaining tone. 你干什么呀? nǐ gàn shén me ya = what the hell are you doing?
