Synopsis

This scene takes place at Pingguo’s (above picture) workplace – a typical massage parlour in Beijing. The boss orders a worker to bring some drinks and snacks into a back room where he and his friends are smoking, drinking, and playing betting games like mahjong and poker. During the fun, they joke about AIDS and having it “only confirms your sexual prowess”.

Meanwhile, Pingguo and her co-workers are busy at work, complaining about customers and overhearing gossip.

Key Sentences Explained

(note: all these references, eg “2.1”, “2.2”, etc all appear in the movie clips. Eg 2._ appears is the the 2^nd movie clip, 3._ appears in the 3^rd movie clip, and so on.)

2.1. 那是花的 nà shì huāde, lit. “that is flowery”. It’s like saying “that is very flirty”, something that a “playboy” would do.

2.2 这两个人真够二的zhè liǎng gè rén zhēn gòu èr de This guy really sucks. 够二 is used by Beijing people, it’s like saying 够傻的gòushǎ de. shǎ means stupid/silly.

2.3 等会儿再说děnghuìr zàishuō. Zàishuō is used a lot in Chinese – it means “let’s talk about it later”

2.4 怎么着？ = means “what”,

2.4.1你少忽悠我=”你少骗我” nǐ shǎo hū yōu wǒ = nǐ shǎo piàn wǒ = you cheated me.

2.5第三张呢？呢 ne is an emphatic particles (for particles explanations, see here). 第三 = dì sān = third

2.6 别闹bié nào is the same 闹 (make commotion) as 热闹rènao (lively)

MW ＝ measure word 一套房子, 一个人。。。。- all the measure words can be found HERE.

2.8 人家剪头发呢 = rénjīa jiǎn tóufa ne “呢” refers to her cutting the hair “right now”

What to do now?

Go to the website and watch/listern the video again.

If you want to practice writing characters, write down characters that you don’t know.

Copy these characters into an animated writing program, such as this one.

Watch the video again and again until you have memorized how to say all the lines in Chinese (there are 10 lines.)
