Lesson Four: Ankun the Spy

Synopsis: This scene takes place in the newlyweds’ apartment. Ankun is the husband, Pingguo is his wife. Pingguo talks about her spotting him spying on her at work and how this could be a big problem for her. Ankun doesn’t seem to care that - he has other (naughty) things on his mind.What do I do here?

Weird Particles/Words Explained

(note: all these references, eg “3.1”, “3.2”, etc all appear in the movie clips. Eg 2._ appears is the the 2^nd movie clip, 3._ appears in the 3^rd movie clip, and so on.)

4.1 洗过xǐguò showered, guo is used after a verb to say that you’ve done it in the past, 用过 = yòng guò = used， 去过 = qù guò = went/been to， 说过 = shuo1 guò = said

4.2 别迷着眼睛啊. 别迷着= bié mízhe = don’t let [something, eg shampoo, dust, etc] get into your eyes

4.3吧bā 。 I will call this a Suggestion Particle, SP or just P (you will see this abbreviation in the subtitles throughout the movie). It is used at the end of a sentence to make the statement softer, like in a suggestion. The other person usually almost always replies with a “yes”. Eg 我们走吧 = wǒmen zǒu bā = let’s go, 我们去吃饭吧 = wǒmen qù chīfàn bā = lets go eat.

It can also be used in questions when you already know the answer: 你没事吧？= nǐ méishì bā = you’re ok right? 你开始上课了吧 = nǐ kāishǐ shàngkè le bā？= So your classes have already started. 你是Mike吧？= nǐ shì Mike bā = So you’re Mike.

4.4 先别xiānbié = wait a min./pls. don’t do this yet

Watch the video again and again until you have memorized how to say all the lines in Chinese (there are 10 lines.)
